Surveyors at Wilmac have a vast amount of experience and have set out a wide variety of structures ranging from roads, sewers and buildings to grid lines for steelwork, piles, cladding rails, footpaths, boundaries, oil and gas pipelines, high voltage cables and oil rigs.
In its simplest form setting out involves interrogating an engineers or architects CAD drawing for a list of coordinates of features to be set out. The total station is setup at known control points on site and these points are then set out as ranges and bearings between the control points.
A lot of preparatory work can be done in the office prior to visiting the site. This saves a great deal of site time. Sometimes we are presented with a list of coordinates to be set out but usually we have a survey, a site layout and for example house type drawings or piling layouts. We would then check all house/pile dimensions/grid lines/steel work and alert the designers to any discrepancies before they become a major issue. Discrepancies are very often found. When on site we liase closely with the site staff to check latest drawing revisions etc.
House setting out would usually be done over two visits. During the first visit main building corners would be set out along with finished floor levels. The second visit would take place shortly after the concrete footings had been poured when nails would be hammered into this concrete at all the outside brickwork corners.
All worked is checked by the site engineer. Setting out work would only be done by senior personnel. These people have a great deal of setting out experience and have set out a wide variety of objects from normal building site features such as grid lines, piles, houses, roads, drainage and boundaries to bus stations, wind farms, maize mazes, footpaths, oil and gas pipelines, oil rig anchor buoys and oil rigs themselves.
